The Forum of National Ethics Councils (NEC), hosted by each EU Member State during the time of its presidency, provides for an international informal debate in the field of ethics and science. Traditionally, on the first day, there is a joint meeting of the Forum and members of the European Commission’s Group on Ethics in Science and Biotechnology. This time, rights and freedoms of the individual in competition with the interests of society will be the leading theme. Topics will also include some of those on the priority list of ethical questions proposed for a pan-European discussion, e.g. end of life decisions and responsible biomedical research.
